Best NE Portland Breakfast? Just might be Pambiche. If you have lived in Portland particularly on the east side of the Willamette it is hard to imagine you have not tried Pambiche at least once. Also, hard to imagine if you have eaten at Pambiche that you would only be able to go one time.
With that said with their awesome signage you may have considered about doing breakfast at Pambiche and maybe not done it yet. Well that was the case for me and Pam. Recently a friend shared their “weekend recap” which included breakfast at Pambiche and how did she like it? Well it is Pambiche after all, she of course thought it was great. But of course she did, consider your experiences at Pambiche and it will occur to you of course they would do an amazing job with breakfast because everything you have ever had there is UNREAL.
I had the Huevos Habanero which is two eggs your style (I had over easy) over two mini ham steaks complete with ham bone, rice, beans and plantain. How awesome is it to have rice with breakfast to mop up your eggs over easy? Very awesome, first time I had done that before. Pam had plantains and an avocado salad which go unreal together, luckily the portion was generous enough that I could try some of that too and bring some home for later. I can not wait to go back and work my way through the breakfast menu just like I have the dinner menu.
Just a quick word on the decor of Pambiche, we absolutely love it. Particularly as owners of Portland Swimwear Boutique Popina, we are considering how to create a fun, tropical atmosphere, Pambiche has completely nailed what I would imagine to be a Cuban feel, very Caribbean-Latino. Every time I go to Pambiche I am inspired by their decor and ask myself what can we do to emulate some of this amazing feel into our boutique. Who knows when you think of Cuba does Retro Swimwear come to mind?
The thing that I find particularly inspiring about Pambiche is that they no doubt could find a larger location, expand and do a larger amount of business, it seems at least from the outside that the owners have said, this is enough for us, lets keep it simple. Alternatively, through their clever signage internally at the shop they look to leverage as much out of their location as possibly by working to convert the “Beans and Rice” dinner customer into a happy hour or breakfast customer.
Ok, get hungry and go to Pambiche now.

Trio Subtonic of Portland, Oregon will be playing their fun, funky Jazz at Vinideus in Beaumont Wilshire tonight. Trio Subtonic recently played at the Mt. Hood Jazz festival and features bass, keyboard and drums.
Trio Subtonic makes music to get stuck in, to chew on, and yes, to groove. Simultaneously uplifting and weighted, expansive and collapsing, they reach across genre lines, incorporating melody and meter in an array of styles and controlled improv-isations. Dormant sounds and lush subterranean landscapes unfold; the party begins, and infectious grooves take root.
I first heard Trio Subtonic at Last Thursday on Alberta Street in Northeast Portland. Walking by, I heard a groove that I could not stay away from, then I settled in and stayed for awhile. What a great treat to have them play at my favorite wine bar less than one mile from the Popina Bathing Suit Shop.
For those of you who to not live in the Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood, it is worth the trip to check out a great up and coming Jazz band in an extremely intimate and cool setting at Portland’s best neighborhood wine shop Vinideus - the wine shop is like beaming yourself to the South of France, lots of people try to pull off this feel, Vinideus does it effortlessly.

Swimming in Portland, Oregon is an important activity in the summer. Temperatures rise and people want to cool down, pretty simple. As green as a place that Portland is I find it a little lame that we can not even swim in the Willamette River, which flows right through the middle of town, without worrying about health risks. I am hopeful that with the completion of Big Pipe project that we will be able swim, float and recreate in the Willamette River in the future without worrying about e-coli. Let’s face it we all love livability in Portland, but in my mind having a river to swim in close to downtown is the measure of a towns livability in the summer time. When that day happens you can bet that Portland’s fun meter will rise 5 - 10 notches. So until that magic day I have compiled a short list (in no particular order) of suggestions for places to cool off and take a dip in PDX.
1) Sandy River - about 20 minutes from downtown Portland. Great natural area, crowded on the weekends but great for people watching.
2) Portland Public Pools - these pools are very family oriented, but even if you don’t have kids or a family it is unbelievable fun. Every day is like the pool party at Caddyshack. Kids are having a ball with floats, there are plenty of lounge chairs to take in the scene and chill. My favorites are Grant Pool, Sellwood Pool and Wilson Pool - all great outdoor pools.
3) Trillium Lake - if you really want to experience the outdoors take an hour and a half drive up to Mt. Hood and Trillium Lake. How about going for a swim and taking in a view of Mt. Hood?
Have suggestions for your favorite please let me know and contribute!

Retro Swimwear Photos where taken prior to the awesome Back Fence PDXevent at Tour de Crape on June 19th. Back Fence PDX is an incredibly fun story telling event that occurs bi-monthly. Typically when I think of storytelling I think of bearded old men rocking on their front porch telling stories that make you say by-gosh. This is not Back Fence PDX, this event brings together a great variety of amateur, but mostly professional story tellers/writers who take turns telling very fresh, current stories. The hosts of this production Frayn and Melissa have very natural chemistry together, keeping the night moving forward, with a fun and smooth grace.
I have finally had a brief moment to post some of the Retro Swimwear pre-show shots - Popina Swim, Portland’s Bathing Suit Boutique participated in a half time Retro Swimsuit show, hopefully someone who attended can send those shots on to me - I would love to see them!
