John Legend Maryhill Winery August 29 in Goldendale, Washington is sure to be a treat so grab your Tankini and Swim Dress and head on out. John Legend is equal parts soul, cool and pop. Maryhill Winery is located approximately 100 miles from Portland, but is a nice, easy drive through the Columbia River Gorge to get there. Most of the seating is General Admission so for all outdoor concert venues plan to get there early to secure a good spot. There is sure to be wine from Maryhill available and you may bring your own picnic lunch.

The 180-degree arc of the amphitheater and the gentle incline of the terrace deliver panoramic views of the stage and the rugged horizon. Ground-level lighting illuminates pathways and adds warmth and ambiance to the amphitheater without drowning out starlight. Guests can bring blankets or chairs for use within the grass-terraced general admission area. (No lounge style chairs) .

Portland Swimming Holes
Summer is right around the corner and if you want to make the most of it you have to grab the summer baton at full speed. Make your lists, schedule your calendar and get in what you can. To get you primed, below are my two favorite Swimming activities around Portland.
As someone who loves to swim in a city surrounded by nature, I find it frustrating that there is not a close-in swimming hole to cool off. My favorite closest spots are Portland’s public pools. There are specific times of the day to lap swim, family swim and lots of special events. Grab your Tankini, hit a lounge chair, read, cool off and take in the chaos. If you have already experienced your neighborhood public pool, maybe venture out and check out a new pool. Our favorites are Grant, Sellwood and Wilson.
River Tubing Portland
Not necessarily for all ages, so you need to be safe, but tubing the river is a great way to spend an afternoon or even a whole day. My favorite spots are not wild, crazy, rides. They are slow, mellow floats. Once you get past the initial chill of the water, on a hot day you quickly forget your initial shock and sink right into your tube. My favorite floats are a mix of a spiritual retreat and Mardi Gras party. At times, a mellow affair, where you can fully relax, take in nature and enjoy the water-level perspective provided by your tube. Other times, people-watching your fellow tubers both on the shore and on the river banks trumps the beautiful surroundings. You can typically purchase an inner tube at a tire shop for the pure old school experience which runs about $15. But I recommend purchasing a new inner tube-shaped float, which costs $48 at Popina (consider it an investment). The advantage of new tubes is that they are designed for quick inflation and deflation and do not need to be blown up at a gas station. My favorite rivers to tube are the Sandy River and the Clackamas River. It is a good idea to go with two cars so you can shuttle back and forth from the put-in.

Jantzen Swimwear will be featured on the upcoming season’s credits of Mad Men. Jantzen Swimwear, one of the oldest and most recognized brands in swimwear will celebrate their 100th anniversary 2010, marking a century as a leader in style, innovation, fit and design with Swimwear made for the glamorous and modern beauty.
Jantzen Swimsuitscreative inspiration comes from their archives. Whether it’s using an Art Deco 1930s image from Jantzen Beach Theme Park where you could “Dance, Swim, and Play” or their successful 1960s “Just Wear a Smile and a Jantzen” campaign, promoting a form of “happiness” reflects today’s marketing pitch to consumers who are responding to old fashioned values. Images from the Jantzen Archives have been seen in the last two seasons of Emmy Award winning Mad Men on AMC and will again be featured in opening credits this fall with images from the 1960s Smile campaign.
To honor their 100th year, Jantzen will explore their archival garment treasures, launching the Heritage Collection by Jantzen – classic Jantzen reinterpreted for the modern woman. The design team pays homage to each Jantzen decade as a milestone in fashion history with a collection reminiscent of the 1920s through today, evoking the signature style and decadence of eras gone by. Jantzen will showcase their 100 years of fashion in partnership with The Wolfsonian–Florida International University beginning July 10th during a thirteen-week exhibition entitled, Beauty on the Beach: A Centennial Celebration of Swimwear. The exhibition will highlight materials such as original artwork by noted artists, advertisements, packaging and bathing suits, and celebrity swim suits. Jantzen, always a leader in international exhibits, looks forward to sharing their treasures with a whole new generation. A kick off reception on Saturday, July 18th, 2009 sponsored by Elle magazine will take place in conjunction with the SAF show for retail partners and local media.
With the trend of nostalgia surging, Jantzen has re-launched Curvallure by Jantzen replacing TrimSwim swimwear line. Curvallure’s clever copy and unique advertising illustrations originated in 1940 with Jantzen’s intimate apparel and “the foundation of Natural Beauty.” In the 1950s Swimwearour Curvallure bras created glamour by changing the shape of America. Today, Curvallure by Jantzen swimsuits are targeted to women who seek all the fit attributes, of contouring and slimming design, including tummy control and lifting features….without sacrificing style.
Empowering women by providing them with confidence to flaunt their curves and taking empowerment to the next level, Curvallure by Jantzen swimsuits will partner with the IFW Go Red for Women Red Dress show event in October to help combat Heart Disease.
As Jantzen commemorates this centennial celebration, the future appears bright. Jantzen, led by its iconic Diving Girl, remains one of the most recognizable brands in swimwear and will continue to provide innovation, style, quality and design in years to come.

Looking to by an Inner Tube in Portland? Wanting to hit one of the local Rivers such as the Sandy River or Clackamas River for some summer River Tubing?
Or maybe you are lucky enough to be taking part in THE BIG FLOAT on the Willamette River 7/28/13.
All inner tube sales are FINAL (no refunds or exchanges).
We at Popina love to raft and swim in the water during the heat of the Portland summers so we looked long and hard for the ultimate River Tubing apparatus. We just got our stock in just in time for the heat of July.
We carry three Inner Tube Portland options:Your basic River Rat Tube $15
The River Tube is a very well thought out inner tube design. Not too big a back rest to get in the way of paddling, two beverage holders, a nice wide air valve for quick inflating and deflating and handles for those adrenaline moments in a rapid, plus heavier rubber shell. $30
RIVER RUN II - TEMPORARILLY OUT OF STOCK
The Double River Tube is a joined version of the River Tube with a beverage cooler in the middle. All the perks of the River Tube and look how happy that couple is. $56
I recommend purchasing oars with this model as it can be very challenging to hand paddle with doubles. We sell oars for $20. The couple pictured below was taken at the begining of their trip, without paddles they were not so happy at the end. Keep your couple together, if you get the Double River please buy paddles.
Popina also has a nice selection of both hand pumps and pumps that plug into your car for auto fill, this is also recommended, it seems like it would not be a big deal to blow up an inner tube, but come on you are going on the river to relax, cut yourself some slack and treat yourself to an inner tube.

Back Fence PDXwill feature Portland’s Popina with a Retro Swimwear Fashion Show! Back Fence PDX is the mastermind of B. Frayn Masters and Melissa Lion together they host a Portland Storytelling Show for Adults which features eight minute unscripted stories by all sorts of interesting people.
This Wednesday June, 17th at the Mission Theater
Back Fence PDX will be celebrating their 1st anniversary. Popina was invited to the very first Back Fence Show one year ago so why not have us back to celebrate year 1! (great decision by Frayn and Melissa).
Last years fashion show was by far the most fun we have had with a fashion show, it included an impromptu q&a of the models and great commentary by the Back Fence Babes.
Show starts at 7:15pm this weeks theme……Caught Red-Handed, should be fun!
